Hurrikan Gordon hat sich in den letzten Tagen mit einer stärkeren, westlichen Höhenströmung quer über den Atlantik in Richtung Azoren verlagert und wütete dort als Sturm der Kategorie 1. Die Mittelwinde lagen vor kurzem noch bei etwas über 120 km/h, auf der südöstlichsten Insel Santa Maria wurden bereits Böen bis 131 km/h registriert. Durch die hohe Zuggeschwindigkeit sind die Regenmengen nicht allzu groß. Die Azoren liegen zwar nicht mehr in der typischen Region für tropische Wirbelstürme, doch in manchen Jahren liegen sie doch in der Zugbahn von - sich meist rasch abschwächenden - Systemen. Hurrikan Gordon auf den Azoren ist aber sicher kein extremes Ereignis, von einem Zusammenhang mit der Klimaerwärmung ganz zu schweigen. In den kommenden Stunden dürfte Gordon sich weiter abschwächen und zu einem außertropischen Tief werden. Mit Sturmböen und starken Regenfällen könnte dieses System allerdings noch den Nordwesten der Iberischen Halbinsel plagen.
Hurrikan Helene indes wird bald nach Norden bis Nordosten abdrehen und somit weiter keine Bedrohung für Land darstellen. Zur Zeit ist Helene ein Hurrikan der Kategorie 2 mit Mittelwinden um 175 km/h.
